Grand Challenges in Student Mental Health

In 2010 the National Institute of Mental Health and the Global Alliance for Chronic Disease set out to identify the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health . The goal was to identify challenges and pinpoint priorities to lead to substantial improvements in the lives of people living with psychiatric illness.

In 2013 we are setting out on a similar project to identify challenges and pin point priorities in Student Mental Health.

How will this project work?

Step 1

We are asking you for your suggestions; what do you think are the Grand Challenges facing Student Mental Health. We will be asking students and university staff to share their thoughts.

Step 2

We will pull together all of the responses to our initial Grand Challenges Survey into a single list of Challenges for Student Mental Health. We will send this list to everyone who responded to the initial survey to ask for your thoughts on which are the relevant Challenges on the list.

Step 3

We will use your feedback about the relevant Challenges compile a consolidated list the top 20 Grand Challenges facing Student Mental Health. In our final survey, we will ask for your thoughts on four dimensions for each of the 20 Grand Challenges:
  • How FEASIBLE is it to tackle this Challenge?
  • How much will the QUALITY of student life be improved if this Challenge is overcome?
  • What is the size of the IMPACT of this Challenge at the moment?
  • How IMMEDIATE a concern is this Challenge?

Step 4

We hope that the final report on the Grand Challenges facing student mental health will be published by 2014.

Support us to Identify the Grand Challenges in Student Mental Health...

The best way that you can support us to identify the Grand Challenges in Student Mental health is to circulate our survey on the Grand Challenges to as many students or University Staff as possible.
