Survey: Understanding student mental health
The Current State of Support for Students
|
Student Run Self Help (SRSH) is a charity established in 2009 to provide low-level, easily accessible support for students and young people with eating disorders. We have become increasingly concerned about the provision of care for students. To understand the situation more clearly we have been speaking to students about mental health services, looking at what works and where improvements can be made. This report summarizes recommendations that students have put forwards for changing and improving care for students with eating disorders.
In 2010 – 2011 we ran a questionnaire which was completed by over 300 students. Small focus groups were conducted following the questionnaire to offer a more in depth discussion of the support services available to students with eating disorders. This report considers the contribution of the University Counselling Service, the GPs, specialist services and peer support systems. Focus groups also discussed the support received from their university colleges and the university in general. In these discussions we were able to look at the care pathway for students and think about how services linked up. This project aimed to find specific points for improvement rather than focusing on problems. While some students report fantastic stories of support and encouragement from tutors and service providers, the overall picture suggests that these positive experiences are thanks to specific individuals caring and understanding. There does not appear to be a consistently adopted policy of care and support either in within a university, amongst GPs or even at the level of specialist services. This report makes the following recommendations. |
